The first thing to do was to try out some pencil sketches, to see whether I could actually draw. The faces are based either on photos of the Green Man which I took myself, or on other sketches of Green Men found in Gloucester Cathedral.
I had a good idea which face I wanted to use for my picture, so I sketched it bigger (actually, larger than the image would ultimately be) again in pencil.
I also wanted to test out my elite Indian Ink skills before committing them to the final work.
Now, a few photos of the final work as it was made. Here's the pencil outline:
With the watercolour wash (still wet, hence being so shiny in the photo):
And finally, the finished work. The colour balance on this camera isn't very good; if you consider that the table is actually pine it might help to visualise just how much red there is in the shot which shouldn't be there.
